Kitchen Gardens at The Hermitage

Andrew Jackson's Hermitage, home of President Andrew Jackson, contains three gardens tended by the Master Gardeners of Davidson County in partnership with the Ladies’ Hermitage Association. These are among the original Master Gardener historical gardens.

The Café Garden at the Visitor Center greets guests with a lovely display of flowers, grasses, and herbs upon their arrival. The Kitchen Garden, set behind the mansion, is primarily a vegetable garden that also contains some herbs. Here you will find the vegetables grown in the early 1800s, including peanuts, tomatoes, eggplants, beans, and watermelons.

The second herb garden, catches the eye of visitors as they take a break from their tours. All three gardens reflect the character and composition of typical gardens of President Jackson’s time. Many of the vegetables and herbs are grown from seeds that originated at Monticello, the home of President Thomas Jefferson, himself an avid gardener.
